Cyberpunk 2077 is one of THOSE games. Announced eight years ago, delayed three times and all the more hotly anticipated for it. CD Projekt Red, developer of the much-loved Witcher series, has taken its penchant for open world, action-led RPGs and moved to a setting 50+ years in the future. And what a messy, violent and compelling future it is. The world of Cyberpunk 2077 is virtually dripping in neon. Wearing its influences on its sleeve (and in its title), it has notes of everything from William Gibson's Neuromancer to Ghost in the Shell right up to Westworld, not to mention a huge great dollop of Neal Stephenson's Snowcrash. Meanwhile, its characters are occasionally reminiscent of Sopranos characters (albeit ones who've had a bits replaced with wearable robots), with Night City's seedy underbelly fully on show. You play as V, a cybernetically enhanced mercenary just getting started as a gun for hire. Recruited by rock star/anti-corporate terrorist/dead man/Keanu Reeves (yes, he's actually played by Keanu Reaves), you'll find yourself picking up a veritable barrage of missions to take the fight to your corporate overlords. Where The Witcher was all about swordplay and magic, the gameplay of Cyberpunk 2077 is squarely in the FPS camp, but a raft of weird and wonderful cybernetic enhancements will keep you climbing the skill tree and exploring Night City. Cyberpunk 2077 is, in a nutshell, AAA RPG action at its most neon-drenched.
